New Year’s Resolution: Work on my credit score!

I am a bit ashamed to say what my credit score is. I never really paid attention to it until now, and I have made some mistakes with my credit in the past. I want to work on my credit score, starting NOW! I know, I titled this “New Year’s Resolution”, but it really is never too early to pay attention to it, so I am starting NOW! I plan to blog about my journey and hopefully help some of you along the way.

Now, I said that I was ashamed to say what my score is, but I am going to do it anyway. I think that is needed, in order to accurately gauge how well this works. So, here goes….

My Credit ScoreYes folks, it is THAT bad! To say that my credit is in the gutter is being nice. So, I guess what I am saying here is that there isn’t much that can hurt me at this point, but there is a lot that can help.

I signed up for a free account with Credit Sesame, which is where I was able to find out my credit score. They are showing me tips to help increase my score, and one of those was to get a secured credit card that will report to the credit bureaus. They even gave a list of the top cards to use, so I decided on Account Now, because it was easy to link to my PayPal account to depot money and pay my bill, and they also gave me $10 just for signing up and adding a minimum of $10 to my card. I also set up Direct Deposit to this card to make it easier for me to make sure it is always paid off. They also offer a $15 bonus if you set up Direct Deposit totaling $500 a month for 2 consecutive months, so that is going to be a nice bonus.

Next, I signed up with Manilla, where I was able to link my cell phone account, my PayPal account, my bank account and many of my regular bills that I have to pay each month. This will allow me to see what is coming up, what, if any, are past due. I am glad to finally be able to see all of this in one place, it really does make it easier to keep track of them all to ensure that bills are paid on time, so nothing will go into collections. This is a MAJOR part of increasing my credit score. Manilla also has a referral program, where they will give you a $5 WalMart or Amazon Gift Card for each person that you refer. This can only help someone, so once you have an account, make sure to tell your friends and family, because these gift cards can lower what you pay out in cash, leaving more cash to pay your bills.

I will be using these programs and finding others that are completely free. I refuse to pay for this service, when I know I can get it for free. I will update you on my progress as I go and let you know if I find some other free sites to use to monitor your credit, if you want to try to increase your score this coming year too.
